What Is a Ductless Mini-Split Air Conditioner?

However, multi-family housing and retrofitting non-ducted heaters are the most popular applications.

An interior air handler and an outdoor compressor/condenser The conduit connects the indoor and outdoor units.

It is usually wall-mounted and provides heated and cooled air directly into the living area. A single-zone system provides heating and cooling to a single room. Other ductless mini splits are multi-zone systems, combining one outdoor unit with many indoor units for year-round comfort.

Single-zone: One indoor unit matches one outdoor unit in a single-zone system. The compressor/condenser unit sends refrigerant and power to the interior unit through a short conduit. The HVAC system is installed with minimal housing damage.

Multi-zone systems: One outdoor unit can power up to five interior units. Each indoor unit is operated by wireless remote control, allowing the user to customize their comfort.

How Does a Ductless Air Conditioner Work?

A ductless air conditioner works in the same way as a central air conditioner.

Unlike a central air conditioner, which uses one indoor unit to cool the entire house via ducts and vents, a ductless air conditioner cools only the room in which it is installed.

The outdoor unit pumps refrigerant to the indoor coil in a ductless HVAC system, also known as the evaporator coil. Heat and humidity are removed from the indoor air as the refrigerant changes from liquid to gaseous condition. The gaseous refrigerant then cycles back to the condenser coil, which is cooled and re-converted to a liquid.

Troubleshooting Tips for Ductless Mini-Split Systems

Knowing how to troubleshoot your mini-split air conditioner and how to change your house air filters will help you get the most out of your system and warn you when a technician is needed.

Examine the exterior unit. The outside and indoor units of a ductless mini-split system must be used simultaneously. If your mini-split system is not working correctly, check the outdoor compressor/condenser unit.

Drifting leaves and other debris can cause harm to the outdoor unit, reducing its ability to provide hot or freezing air for the house. Fortunately, an HVAC expert can remove ice buildup and lubricate the system to improve airflow and efficiency.

Inspect filters and vents. When your mini-split air conditioner sucks in air to cool, it also draws in dirt and dust. These particles can build up inside the filter and vents, reducing airflow and hence cooling performance. Replace your air filter every 30-60 days and replace it more frequently if you have allergies. If there are serious clogs, hire an HVAC specialist to clean them.
