Calculate Lifetime Cost Factors of Your New Cooling System Before Buying
While the purchase and installation price on your new cooling system may be attractive, what you want to consider is how much it will cost you in the long run. While it is important to save a buck or two for every purchase, savings do not automatically translate to low cost, especially for home appliances. Their value is not at the point of sale, but is expressed over time.
So how do you calculate lifetime cost for your new cooling system?
There are basically three factors that Air Conditioning Contractors recommend to calculate lifetime cost:
- Efficiency Ratings
First of all, the system has a dated warranty period by the manufacturer. This is a time indicated that the device should perform as expected; all other defined conditions holding true. This period may not incur any maintenance and repair cost since the manufacturer will shoulder any costs incurred under normal operating conditions. You may, however, be inconvenienced during such times when the manufacturer has to service your cooling system while under warranty.
The Heating Season Performance Factor (HSFP) is a rating that measures how well the cooling system uses the energy input to cool the air through the compressor system. The most efficient systems have ratings of 8 to 10 on the 1-10 scale. Any lesser means that you will be losing more energy than you would like
The Season Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER) is the rating that measures how well your new system uses energy to cool down. The SEER scale allows efficiency ratings of more than 13, which is a 30% energy saving rate, so a rating of 18 would be pretty good, meaning you will be able to save up on energy usage over time. Cooling systems normally last from 10 to 15 years, so after the expiry of warranty support, your maintenance fees will kick in. Using preventative maintenance models, you may want to perform checks on your system at least four times a year to prevent any major issues. If you calculate lifetime cost for your energy expenditure for the least efficient device, you will probably end up with a discouraging amount as compared to an efficient device. Efficient cooling systems cost more, since it takes a lot more engineering to produce them.
